Rātā Creek FAQs

Here are our frequently asked questions specific to products, origin, shipping & returns, and corporate gifting. If you would like any further information, we’d love to hear from you via our contact page.

Products

  • Yes, our throws are made in New Zealand using wool only from our farm in Otago.

This wool never leaves the country. It goes straight from the farm to the wool scour in Timaru to be washed, then sent up to the North Island to be turned into yarn and then woven into throws.

  • The throws are approximately 150cm wide and 200cm long, including the fringes at each end. The eyelash fringes on the coal herringbone throw are about 5cm long and the traditional twisted fringes on all other throws are about 10cm long.

The knee rugs are about 72cm wide and 168cm long including a 10cm traditional twisted fringe at each end.

Please note that there is some minor variation in the sizes due to the nature of the weaving process.

  • Our wool isn’t scratchy and is comfortable against bare skin.

  • Wool has wonderful attributes which means it is suitable all year round and adjusts to a person’s temperature. It has thermoregulating properties such as the ability to both absorb and release moisture, and the crimped (wavy) fibres allow for insulation and breathability helping to reduce overheating in the summer.

Wool is also naturally fire resistant so is much safer around a fire, barbecue or brazier than synthetic fibres.

  • No, our own throws haven’t shown any signs of shedding or pilling after years of high use.

  • Please see the Product Care page for full details.

  • Wool is naturally hypoallergenic.

Origin

  • Our wool is definitely ethically sourced. All of our wool is from our own farm, and we have achieved Farm Assurance Programme Plus Gold certification. This means we have met strict standards covering origin, traceability, food safety, animal welfare, people, environment, and biosecurity.

  • We shear for animal health reasons. If we didn’t take off the wool, it would continue to grow (just like human hair). It would become very heavy and very hot for the animal.

The sheep are brought into our woolsheds for shearing, and then taken back to their paddocks straight afterwards.

  • Our farm is in Otago in the South Island of New Zealand.

Shipping & returns

  • Yes, we offer international shipping. Please contact us directly to discuss.

  • We aim to send out orders the same day an order is received or the following day.

Depending on where the order is being sent to and the courier, it is usually delivered within two days but please allow an extra day or two for rural delivery.

We can give overseas customers an approximate time frame for delivery at the time of ordering.

  • Absolutely, we love sending our throws as gifts. Our throws are a great choice for gifting.

Please let us know so that we don’t include the invoice in the parcel.

We can also gift wrap the throw and include a card or note with your words. Just get in touch so that we can make the gift as special as you would like.

  • To be sustainable as possible we try to keep waste to an absolute minimum, so our throws are packed straight into a recycled plastic courier bag.

If you purchase a tote bag as well, we will put the throw in the tote bag first, then put it in the courier bag.

  • Please see our Shipping and Returns page for full details of our returns and exchange policy.
